Tiger Rising

We are currently reading the book, Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo. The book makes references to putting feelings, emotions, thoughts in a suitcase and keeping it there. Rob constantly is holding back from opening his suitcase. He makes a new friend, Sistine that starts to open this suitcase. When Rob gets hurt, he reminds himself to keep the suitcase closed. This week, we will find out more information about the tiger aspect of the story and if Rob decides to tell Sistine about his new work with the tiger.

Heading out by Gloria Kamen

Very excited to have received this book in the mail. 24 influential people's biographies are briefly explained in this book. The story will be great to use for writing, reading, speaking and listening in the classroom! I think the students will truly enjoy the stories. I did when I attended the Write Tools Training and the instructor presented it to us.

Fabulous First Three Days of School

We had a great first three days of school! The students worked a lot on common area expectations and also expectations in the classroom. Ask them to share with you information about SOAR and Channel 14 news team! This coming week, we will have a formative assessment on citing textual evidence and summarizing story elements. So far, they have worked on the exposition of the literature. The exposition includes the setting and characters in the text. Looking forward to another great day tomorrow!

Summertime Cheer

I have had so many opportunities to learn this summer and I am excited to bring it into the class! I attended a 2-day workshop in Des Moines, Our Kids. It reminded all of us that each of the students we have are ours and we need to treat them with respect. I also attended a Standards Based Grading workshop for two days that really helped me understand how grading should be done! I can't wait to share my new knowledge with the rest of the teachers! I attended a Diversity class for three days that made me think outside the box a lot. Also, I started a graduate course, Introduction to Graduate Study and Research. For my research, I am looking into the effects of spelling. I know that has been a question that a lot of parents are asking so I am diving deeper into that topic! I am also a part of the new PBIS program that will be introduced this year at Creek. Finally, I am attending in August the Write Tools workshop! I have had one educational and positive summer. Look forward to sharing with you in August what we will be doing!
